94th Aero Squadron is a Hit

Thanks to Clando Brownlee and Jeff Perwin from the San Diego Children's Coalition for having us perform at their meeting. It was great. Max, Max, Valentine and Alex all played and sang - Alex played amazing solo jazz guitar and jammed with us for the first time in our encore. Valentine actually met a lady named Valentine so at one point it was Max, Max, Valentine & Valentine!

The 94th Aero Squadron is a WW1-themed restaurant, which is strange because that's exactly what we're studying in History Class right now. Here I am warming up...

...just about ready to play...

They put us in this nice gazebo outside, it was just light enough to read our songsheets but too dark for the audience to see us messing up.

A LOT of people showed up, it was held outside on the back patio, a nice cool San Diego night, firepit roaring, lots of appetizers, everybody had fun! Lots of politicians here, we had to keep them away from the microphone!

And an added bonus - how many musicians does it take to set up a music stand? Answer; Four. One's late, one is busy tuning up, one actually sets it up and the other only plays bass.

Getting Ready for the 24th

Max came over again to practice for the 94th Aero Squadron show.

The manager at the restaurant asked us what kind of music we play. He sounded kind of suspicious. I said "Jazz. You know, soft jazz, like with violins and acoustic guitars. Oh yeah, and folk music. Have you heard Peter Paul and Mary?"

So here we are practicing our lead-off song, "Hey Joe", by Jimi Hendrix:

and the classical guitar classic "Romanza" to quiet the manager down if he starts looking nervous:

The new PA-style speaker amp can be seen in the lower left corner. My dad traded the use of this for a week for one his blueberry pies -

Practice Session

The first practice session with Max, Max & Valentine. This went all day, the results sound pretty professional considering Curly Max and Valentine have never met before!

Max Joins Varsity Strings

We had an awesome meeting the other day with an amazing guitarist from Mira Mesa High school! He's been playing for seven years and he's got some sweet chops to show off to the world ! And his name, believe it or not, is MAX!
Here he is -

So now we have three guitarists: Max, Max, and Max. We have become Max cubed. We are going to call the newest Max "Curly Max" because of his hair. He resembles the young Robert Plant, don't you think?

Paper Moon Music reccomended Curly Max as one of their most talented young guitarists. So we invited him over and gave him the usual treatment: let's hear you play something, lemme play your cool guitar, and here's a batch of cookies for your trouble. WOW! Things couldn't have gone smoother, especially when he uncased his Gibson ES-345 Tobacco Sunburst with gold hardware! Curly Max proceeded to cook up a sizzling soup of funk, jazz, and blues. Then I asked him if he dug Led Zeppelin, and Curly Max started ripping out "Bring it on Home." We knew that this guy was in.
